A long portion of the Trail runs along salt ponds which are now part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. These ponds adjoin the southern edge of San Francisco Bay.

In the distance on a clear day, beyond the Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges across the Bay, you can see from here the skyline of San Francisco, about 30 miles away. | |
